Trust us. You don’t want to start your move without learning how to pack fragile items properly. Once you begin packing, you’ll be surprised just how many breakables you have. So whether it’s your first time moving or you’re preparing for the next one, basic packing knowledge is a must to keep your valuables safe for moving. We’re with you in this and our professional movers at People-Move Moving have valuable tips that you don’t want to forget when packing your fragile items.
Here are some tips to pack your fragile belongings for safe moving.
- Prepare in advance.
Before the big day, make sure you have everything on your inventory list so you know what goes where and when. Fragile items need special care to keep them safe so securing them first would be a great idea. If you’re doing this without the help of a professional, ask a friend or family member to help. It’s easy to overestimate your capabilities. You don’t want to start moving items that are too much for you to handle or carry.
- Have the right packing materials.
The safety of your breakables starts with the right packing materials. Be sure to have the following items handy before packing them.
- Boxes in different sizes. (You’ll want to use smaller boxes so they don’t break under the weight of heavier objects.)
- Bubble wrap
- Styrofoam peanuts
- Packing Paper or Newspapers
- Dish and glass packers
- Markers and “fragile” stickers
- Plastic furniture covers
- Tapes
- Towels
- Label. Label. Label.
We said it three times because it’s as important as packing itself. Labeling the boxes with breakables as “fragile” will remind you and your movers to handle them more carefully as well as make your unpacking quicker and easier. Labeling the boxes will also help with your inventory checklist.
- Follow the right packing techniques.
Now that you have the materials ready, here are the steps to securely pack your breakables.
- Tape all the open seams and corners of the box. This is to ensure that fragile items don’t fall through the bottom of the box.
- Cushion the base of the box with packing peanuts or bubble wrap. You can also line the insides of the box with bubble wrap for more protection.
- Wrap each item individually with packing paper, bubble wrap, newspaper, or towel. Be sure to add more wrap around the thinner parts of your breakables like the handles on mugs.
- Fill hollow items with packing paper to keep them secure.
- Always put the heaviest items on the bottom and lighter ones at the top. You can also put pliable cardboards in between before placing fragile items on top of each other.
- Stuff empty spaces in the box with packing peanuts, packing paper, or towel to keep fragile items in their place.
- Add a top layer of cushioning before sealing the box for added protection.
- If you’ve kept your electronics’ original box and packing components, repackage the items using their original packaging. The original packaging is specifically designed for the product and provides the highest level of protection.
- Be patient. Packing items takes time but when you do it right, moving to your new home becomes less stressful. If you’re planning for a long-distance or cross-country move, we’ve got tips for you as well.
